When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer in Utah?
If you're expecting a baby, you probably have approximately 4,782 things on your to-do list.
Nursery. Car seat. Pediatrician. Baby shower. Hospital bag.
And somewhere in there you may have thought, “Wait...when am I supposed to book newborn pictures?”
The short answer?
Earlier than you might think.
At EM J Photography, most families reserve their newborn session during the second trimester. You don't need to know exactly when your baby will arrive—we reserve your due date, then schedule the actual session once baby makes their grand entrance.
Why book newborn photos before baby arrives?
Newborn photography is a little different from a regular portrait session.
Babies, inconveniently, don't care about our calendars. 😆
Your due date isn't an appointment, so I only accept a limited number of newborn due dates at a time. That gives us flexibility when babies arrive early, late, or exactly when predicted.
Booking while you're pregnant also means we have time to plan your session before you're living on two-hour stretches of sleep.
During your consultation, we'll talk about the colors and style you love, poses, props, family and sibling images, artwork, and all the little details that will make the session feel like your family.
What is the best age for newborn pictures?
For the traditional sleepy, curled-up newborn portraits you see in my portfolio, I generally photograph babies during those early newborn weeks.
But here's something I really want new parents to know:
There isn't a magical expiration date on photographing your baby.
I've photographed older newborns beautifully, too.
As babies grow, sessions simply change. They may be more alert, stretch out a little more, make eye contact, or give us completely different expressions.
Your baby doesn't have to perform for their newborn session.
My sessions are intentionally baby-led. We feed when baby needs to eat, soothe when baby needs soothing, and change direction when baby tells us a particular pose isn't happening that day.
Baby is the boss around here.
What if my baby comes early or late?
Totally normal.
When you book with EM J Photography, we're reserving room around your due date, not trying to predict your baby's birthday.
Once baby arrives, we'll choose the actual session date.
That's one of the biggest reasons I recommend booking during pregnancy rather than waiting until after delivery.
What if my baby is already here and I haven't booked?
Contact me anyway.

Don't decide you've “missed it” before asking.
If I have an opening, we'll talk about baby's current age and what we can realistically create. Your photographs may look a little different than those of a seven-day-old baby—and that's okay.
This isn't about checking off a perfect Pinterest newborn session.
It's about remembering your baby exactly as they were at the beginning of their story.
When should I contact a Utah newborn photographer?
My recommendation is to start looking during your second trimester.
That gives you time to find a photographer whose work you love, learn about their approach and safety experience, understand pricing, and make sure the entire experience feels right for you.
And if you're already in your third trimester?
Don't panic. Ask.
